Ngozi was waiting eagerly for Funmi and Seyi’s email and she was refreshing her email almost every five minutes. She tried to put herself in their shoes and imagine the situation they would be in, that was if they followed her instructions. No doubt there would be sexual tension between them. It was going to be a painful and lonely night for both of them but she hoped it would help them. She worked mind absently on other flies till she saw the envelope sign popping on her email signaling there was a new mail. She opened it quickly. It was from Seyi.

She quickly scanned through, hmmmmmm, as expected. The husband was only reacting to his wife’s actions and the wife was also reacting to her husband’s action! The blame circle that never breaks! As she was going through the husband’s complaints, the wife’s mail dropped in her inbox and it was still the same things they talked about few days ago. She made notes in the file she has opened for them. She compared the song they had chosen, interesting.

“Funmi and Seyi are lucky. They still love, respect and adore each other; they just don’t know that the other still cares. They are suffering from misunderstanding and lack of communication. If I had someone to explain this to me then, maybe I will still be married but I’m going to do my best to make sure this family doesn’t break,” she thought. She couldn’t wait for the day to break. She slept planning on how to get them back on track.

Only when you have a restless night will you know that the hours between night and day is long! After turning and twisting for hours, it was finally morning and Funmi’s body ached her because she didn’t get a good rest. She laid on her back studying the design above her and thinking about her night.

“I hope this guy had a sleepless night too. Why do I miss him this much when he’s just in the next room? Should I go and see him? No, he will know I miss him? What will I do if he comes in here self? Ngozi can’t know if we talk to each other or have sex if we don’t tell her. I need him right now! She was about getting out of bed when she changed her mind again. What if he doesn’t agree, that will be embarrassing oo. Ngozi had said we won’t get the desired result if we don’t follow the instructions but this is hard mehn!”  She slumped back into her bed for a few minutes before getting up to clean up. She left to make breakfast because she needed a cup of coffee like she needed air to breathe!

I’m sure something is wrong with this bed, or maybe the bed sheet. If not then it is surely the pillow because sleep has refused to come and every time I checked time, it is just five minutes from the last I checked!” He kept on tossing about the bed and at a particular time into the night, he thought about sneaking into their room and sleep beside his wife. He missed her rhythmic soft snoring, the way she backed him, the smell of her hair and her constant kicking under the duvet. He was surprised at himself because they have been sleeping together in the same bed for years with minimum contact so how can he be missing her in their bed? He checked his time again and it was five minutes past three in the morning!

“Enough! I can’t sleep here; I’m going to my room, after all, Ngozi can’t know if we don’t tell her. He headed towards their room but stopped at the door. What if she rejects me or allows me into the bed then tells Ngozi?  Maybe she has even gone back to her old self because she didn’t try to talk to him when they met in the kitchen earlier.” He turned back and walked towards his children’s room, he would be more comfortable there. He surrounded himself with the girls’ teddies and it helped him sleep, it was 5:57 AM when he woke up.

His eyelid was very heavy; they hurt as he tried to open them but the persistent aroma of coffee kept inviting him to open up. For a second, he was confused about where he was but his memory came back in seconds. Funmi must be awake. He yawned and got up lazily from the bed. He staggered towards his room and hit the shower.

Funmi was on her second cup of coffee when she heard movement above her. Seyi was up. She checked the coffee machine to see there was enough coffee left for him, after that she dished his food on the dining table. Funmi didn’t know what to do with all the time she has on her hands before 2 PM Ngozi was due, she decided to go shopping for foods and her children candies. “Yes, shopping will keep me sane till Ngozi arrives.”

Seyi put on the first thing his hands touched in the wardrobe, he just wanted to get downstairs and get some coffee into his system. He was putting on his knickers when Funmi entered their bedroom and his entire body reacted to seeing her. They looked at each other for some seconds and they both burst into laughter.

‘Oh, this is crazy!’ Seyi declared still laughing and rolling on the bed. Funmi giggled her way to the other side of the bed and sat down.

‘It’s really crazy. Oh how I miss you!’ Funmi replied and their laughter ebbed away. The tension between them was still there but it was now a good tension. Both wanted to make contact but they had it at the back of their mind that they had to follow the instructions.

‘You have no idea how much I miss you too and how bad I wanted to come back to our bed last night. It was crazy.’ Seyi said.

‘Really? I wanted you to come too! I couldn’t sleep.’ Funmi replied.

‘We can’t get divorced, how will I live without you?’ Seyi said silently and a single tear rolled out of Funmi’s left eye. He touched her shoulder lightly, she shrugged him off.

‘No darling, we have broken enough rules, let’s try to follow the rules but one thing is very clear, if one of us doesn’t leave this house, we will jump on each other! So I’ve decided to go shopping!’ She informed him.

‘Awwww. Can I have one kiss at least? Please?’ He bargained.

‘Come off it spoilt brat. You will get a kiss when the doctor says so!’

At exactly five minutes to two, Ngozi knocked on the Olorunda’s door and Seyi came to answer the door. She smiled into his face saying,

‘Good afternoon and peace be upon this house.’

‘Good afternoon, welcome. How has your day been?’

‘Fine and yours?’

‘Hmmmm, tensed, all thanks to you!’ Seyi said and Ngozi gave a throaty laughter before replying.

‘I’m sorry; it’s for the betterment of everyone. Where’s your wife?’

‘She went shopping, she just got back and in the shower, she will join us soon.’ He informed her as they walked into the sitting room.

Ngozi examined the room, to look for any telltale of a romantic night, she didn’t see. She watched Seyi, he was a bit tensed, not as tensed as she expected to find him, but she couldn’t conclude on what happened in her absence until she saw Funmi. She watched as Funmi climbed down the stairs, she and her husband exchanged a quick smile and a secretive wink which they thought she didn’t see but they didn’t know she was watching out for it already!  “OK! Something happened,” she told herself. She smiled to herself, it wasn’t uncommon for the rules to be broken, even though she didn’t like it, and it meant the couple still believed in each other.

Ngozi and Funmi exchanged pleasantries and they chatted for a while about the office. Ngozi told them to get their jotters and files, also get water for all of them. After all these, the couple took their position opposite her. She watched as Seyi rested his hands on Funmi’s thigh and how Funmi leaned into Seyi’s side. They couldn’t get their hands off each other; it meant they didn’t have sex. Good, they followed part of the rules.

‘Ok guys, I got your emails and I’ve studied them but let me start by asking, how your nights were? Answer honestly please.’

‘It was lonely, empty and restless for me.’ Funmi said and Seyi said it was the same for him too.

‘What that exercise was meant for was to show you how you took each other for granted. When someone is beside us, when they are where we expect them to be, we don’t know their importance but when they leave or they are within our reach but we can’t touch them, then we began to see how relevant and important they are to our lives.’ Ngozi informed them.

‘Starting today’s session, I want you to interlock your fingers, yes, do it now, yeah just like that. You can’t let go of each other hands no matter what till we are done. I see you smiling; you think this is an easy task? Okay oo, we shall see.’ She said opening her file.

‘I’ve summarized everything you sent me into three words and I’ve put it all under one word too. The words are ANGER, ASSUMPTIONS, and TRUST, they are all under COMMUNICATIONS. But that doesn’t mean we won’t discuss things as you have written it.’ She sipped some water.

‘I must warn this is a painful experience but we have to do it. Please be patient with your partner when he or she is talking, even if you don’t agree, be rest assured you will also have your say. I beg you to be sincere and forthcoming with your feelings and thoughts, it’s the only way we can get to the bottom of things. I will be asking random questions; don’t think I am asking because your partner wrote it. Shall we begin?’ “Verily she’s asking because the partners put it down but they don’t have to know that.” Ngozi asked and the couple said yes.

‘Seyi, do you think Funmi is cheating on you?’ Ngozi asked watching the expression on Funmi’s face.

Funmi’s eyes almost bulged out of their sockets, she stared mouth ajar at Seyi. “Does he really think I will cheat on him?”

Seyi wished the floor would open and swallow him, “why did Ngozi start with the question he wrote M beside? Awww.”

‘Well, I think so…’ He said and Funmi was about to talk and remove her hand from his when Ngozi intervened.

‘Funmi, remember he has the right to talk without you interrupting and you can’t remove your hands from his. Seyi please continue.’ Seyi looked at his wife with a face full of apologies.

‘Well, I don’t know if she’s cheating and now that I said it loud I think she could never.  It’s just that she changed. She likes to be pampered, cared for, she likes to talk to me and gossip, you know, but she stopped, I just thought someone else was being there for her. She’s beautiful and always in the midst of influential people, you know…’ he stopped talking and avoided his wife’s eyes.

‘Thank you for that. Funmi, are you cheating on your husband?’

‘No, if anyone is cheating he’s the one!’ Funmi said.

‘Why did you say that and why did you stop needing him?’ Ngozi asked.

‘Well, he likes sex, he stopped touching me. He stopped being romantic and men do that only when they are cheating! I didn’t just stop, he was always coming late and I am already in bed or tired, when he comes home early, he’s either on the phone, his laptop or playing with the kids! How will I have a conversation with him?’ Funmi said fuming with anger.

‘Seyi, are you cheating on Funmi? Can you explain why you’re coming in late?’ Ngozi asked.

‘Well, the kids’ noises don’t allow me to work when I come home early. She’s always with them too so there’s no one to talk with really and she doesn’t cook the food I like to eat anymore. Why am I coming in early and who am I coming to?’ He said equally angry.

‘Why don’t you cook what your husband likes to eat anymore?’ Ngozi asked.

‘The children always tell me on time what they want to eat, he doesn’t and I can’t be making a fresh meal at 7 or 8 PM. He doesn’t appreciate the meals I make either. We are a family and we have to let go of our needs for the children’s wants! Do you think I like to eat noodles and cereals?’ Funmi asked facing her husband.

‘Seyi? What do you say to that?’ Ngozi asked.

‘I don’t give notice before she cooks my favorite meals before, why should it change because of the kids?’ Seyi argued.

Both their palms were slippery with sweats and it was getting hard to remain interlocked

Both were silent and Ngozi knew it was time to solve their least problem. ASSUMPTIONS!!!
