Going back to the past and digging out hurtful memories was a painful task for Seyi. Where did it actually start? How did it begin? What changed? He thought very hard. Yes! It was after the difficult birth of their second child. She locked up, wouldn’t talk to him or allow him to talk to her. She became quiet and withdrawn. She stopped informing him of her well-being. He wrote on the jotter, SHE STOPPED TALKING TO ME AFTER OUR SECOND CHILD WAS BORN.

 

They stopped having sex. His wife used to sleep naked beside him or in sexy see-through nightgowns but she started wearing bra and bum shorts to bed. She used to love sleeping on his chest, but she started turning her back on him. There was no cuddling again and sex became a duty. There was no joy or excitement involved, they were simply indulging and enduring each other. He wrote; NO CUDDLING, NO SEX.

 

Seyi’s heart was racing; the pain he was going through at the moment was fresh, like it just happened yesterday but he was willing to go through it if it will solve his problems. He dug on. Food! Yes, food! His wife was a great cook, if you could think it, she would cook it. She put a twist on every food she made. She loved to please him, she would cook only the things he wanted to eat but now she lived to please the children alone. The children dictated the menu and he didn’t matter anymore. He added FOOD. SHE DOESN’T CARE ABOUT WHAT I WANT TO EAT ANYMORE to the list.

          She has been showing more affection to the kids lately. If they sneezed she would rush to their side but if he did, she will say ‘sorry’ without looking at him. Shouldn’t I be the first person on her mind? They didn’t spend time together anymore except in social gathering. He didn’t feel loved or cared for. He joined LACK OF AFFECTION and ATTENTION, LACK OF COMPANIONSHIP, UNWANTED and LONELY to the list.

 

He has heard it many times that when your wife stop showing you all these affections it could only be one thing. She was cheating on him! Women loved to be attended to, cared for, caressed, cherished and looked after, since his wife wasn’t allowing him to all that for her, it could only mean she was getting it from somewhere else. He wrote I THINK SHE IS UNFAITHFUL but he immediately regretted it. He shouldn’t have done that but unfortunately, he couldn’t cancel it. He wrote M beside it.

He was tired of digging into his emotions because it hurt too. He decided to listen to the songs Ngozi gave them. He inserted the memory card in his phone and opened the file with the lyrics. He scanned through the list.

Some of the songs looked familiar, he inserted his earphone into his phone and ear, and he began listening without following the lyrics. Throughout the listening process; a bittersweet expression was on his face. The songs were heart wrenching and touching just listening to them; he picked few lyrics and fell in love with some. He decided to listen again, this time reading the lyrics alongside. He started again. After another thirty minutes of listening and reading, he settled for two songs. NEVER FAR AWAY and STAY WITH ME. He listened again singing softly along.

Seyi typed his notes and the songs he had chosen on his laptop and sent it to Ngozi. He went downstairs to get some drink, he saw Funmi coming out of the kitchen, and they stared at each other with a face full of raw emotions. They passed each other without saying a word but their arm brushed against each other and a heavy current passed between them. Seyi wanted so bad to turn around but he restrained himself. He went to bed lonely wrapped with his new playlist on repeat.
